The Gecko

My name is Sven, over 50, and traveling is my passion. It all started when I was an exchange student during high school in Australia for 10 months. I got a first taste of what it is like to explore a new culture and live in a foreign country. Since then, I have been traveling around the world to several places in Europe, Central and South America, and Asia. I mostly traveled solo for longer trips, as most friends are in a relationship or have family. Thus, I want to tell you about my solo travel experience and encourage you.

Just like a Gecko, when you travel alone you have to adapt to new situations, cultures and circumstances.

My Travel Experience

The beauty of traveling alone is that you don't need to compromise. You can go with the flow and decide what to do next. I mostly traveled as a backpacker but also did all-inclusive holidays. I really enjoy the flexibility and spontaneous of traveling by myself. Don't get me wrong, of course I like company, but solo travel for me is some kind of meditation for my mind. I prefer budget traveling, but with the age, the accommodations got a bit more comfortable, at least a single room.

I traveled for months before there were smartphones. So the way we travel now has changed with the technology we have today. Of course, with the technology today, you can post your travel experience immediately. Can you imagine traveling without your smartphone or internet? What I have definitely learned is to listen to the locals, use common sense and trust your instincts. The most important thing is to have an open mind!
